Questions

Does compressing reduce the image size in pixels?

No. The width and height stay the same; only the file gets smaller.

Which format compresses best?

WebP usually gives the smallest files. JPG is the most compatible. PNG is lossless, so its quality setting has no effect.

What does "maximum size" do?

The tool lowers the quality step by step until each image fits under the size you set, while keeping it as sharp as possible.
